This august bank holiday was spent at one of my favourite festivals..

Shambala festival magic forest

Shamabala started life in 1999 as a free party for 150 or so people, and through no advertising or promotion has grown into one of the best dates on the calendar.

Here’s the about -

“Shambala began in 1999, with 150 people in a field with a farmers trailor for a stage and a porter loo. Having hijacked a sound system from a students union, we revelled for a weekend with good music, cream teees and general sillyness. Such a good time was had that the next year a few more folk came, and each year since people have got involved or wanted to come!

Shambala is a wild, creative, low-profile, green and family friendly festival. In a world of “boutique events”, shambala has quietly cultivated a down-to-earth mix of creativity, the unexpected, warm atmosphere, and quality entertainment. we offer plenty of stuff to get involved with - cinema’s; stacks of workshops (dance, spritual, craft, loads of kids activities, circus performance, talks, sauna, cafes, massive site art, a lovely crowd and alot of suprises!

The festival is completely independant from advertising and sponsorship! Having never promoted it, Shambala has grown through word of mouth.

The festival attracts people of all ages and ilks, and has a beautifully warm and open atmosphere. You can relax or go loco…

We are a responsible event: Recycling almost all waste, investing in compost loos, using solar, wind & biodiesel, and carefully selecting traders and suppliers. For more on this see links at bottom.

Who are we… we are essentially a group of friends who have grown over the years. We love creating the festival, with it’s connections, creativity, warmth, challenges and suprises. We all have other jobs for income, but devote what time we can to the event. It’s not a money-spinner, or an ego booster; perhaps an obsession though!

2 musical highlights for me were Mama Matrix (sporting masks by Dramask)

Last night was one of the most amazing dj experiences i’ve ever had the pleasure to experience. Caught the end of Dj Derek, at a packed out Rainbow at the 2nd Custom Made event, and saw a lorra lorra love in that room. Boogie took us to the dark side with some quality dubstep, and then the last 2 hours were mine! Muhuhuharharr ;)

Marc Reck and Mark Smallman at Custom Made 2
The crowd at custom made were truly magic. They seemed to love every single thing i threw down..Pickin up the pace from Thievery Corporation and Jam Jah/Paradox, with some Spanish Salsa, a Chicago number/All that Jazz, the Kinks, Austin Powers, Tricky/Black Steel, etc, before launching into a the biggest 2 hour breaks set i could muster, culminating in a few drum n bass classics, and then half an hour encore of dj shadow, taking it back down with the muppets, orbital, and When your good to mama, etc. Absolutley electric energy filled room, and so many new friends, and complex hand shakes. I was exhausted from all the bouncing, but still couldnt sleep hours after i got to bed from all the adrenaline.
the crowdI dont think i’ll ever forget it!

There is some more great pics from Rob Nicholas here and there was very kind things said, and i thought it’d be nice (for me!) to post a few.

From : Ric Woodall (Night Times editor + Breakthru promoter) - “I had an absolute Riot, great night out. Met many nice people, Derek and boogie were good, but Mark Wrecs set was something else truly talented guy”

From : Mark and Shona (Custom Made) - “Marc, You dirty little bastard!! What an amazing set!! You got the entire room dancing and hanging off the rafters! Never seen so much energy in one room for a long time…..on a Sunday too!! Thank you loads for being part of Custom Made and can’t WAIT to hear the next installment!! Marc Reck ROCKS :)

From : Becca Thomas (Birmingham Dance Collective) - “thank you so much for last night! my favourite dancefloor moment has to be dancing (and singing, if my memory serves) with pyn to that song from chicago. and the muppets of course, they were good too. hope i haven’t just destroyed your rep as a hardcore breaks dj..

Relentless used to be a band i was in with two housemates and now very good friends, Marcus Parsons and Rich Kendall. More on that at another time..For now it better describes a week in the studio working on the Drop beats and Project X Presents Heroes Journey sets, 3 of my own tracks, the next Mr Elephant Radio Show, and sorting music to play at the 2nd Custom Made event tomorrow after Dj Derek…

custom made flyer 2In the 3 16 hour days, most of these are getting someway to being fairly rounded, and i’m now going to couple a meeting about Mr Elephant with drinks and food in the pub with Pyn, (after being inspired by the hundreds of records i got through yesterday), before djing at Becca’s party later tonight.

Tomorrow will therefore be just what the doctor ordered…The last one was a really nice chilled affair, and i can’t wait to here dj Derek, as he sounds like a most interesting bloke… I just wish there was just one more day in every week…

Spent the evening in the studio today recording two members of the mighty Mama Matrix...Not the zapperesque, balkan gypsy jazz music you might imagine, but a few childrens songs such as “snail slither slowly”

mama matrix

Mama Matrix are defintly one of my favourite bands in Birmingham, and Daz and Anne the ever charming couple, so it was a nice excuse to spend a few hours recording some songs for (Anne and Pyn’s) current “How does your garden grow” kids/schools workshop project, of which i should also be producing their publicity, along with the cd.

Afterwards i felt a little wiped out, as been feeling a bit under the weather last couple of days, but there was still time to learn a blues scale, and a reggae/ska technique from mr daz, of which i can pass on to any budding guitarists..(well the reggae technique anyhow)

“To achieve the “un tchick” sound use the palm of the hand to mute the strings, on the down stroke”

Nice one Daz :) For more guitar lessons, contact him, via their myspace :) (or check out their new recordings/see em at Shambhala etc;)

Is coming along really well it has to be said…The standard i have for anything i would put around for general hearing, is just as high as any records i would buy as a dj, so in my head at least, when it does come together it will be on the level.

Also important to me is write a range of music, and not just breaks tracks. I have one acoustic instrumental with a few words, one almost finished breaks track, with drop beats not bombs mix, a dubby track and then a well produced but early in the arrangement breaks number.

que club in birmingham These last two days and today i have been working pretty soldily til 5/6am on the breaks and dubby track, with the occasional blast on the guitar and vox. I’m getting very excited, and having two massive performances to be writing for, is exciting with in itself, and also very useful, as it allows the music to fit with the narrative and location.

que clubJust before i stopped for the day at midnight to spend some time with my girlfriend, i thought i’d make a start on putting the Hero’s Journey set together, opening with my downtempo track, aptly entitled “The Call to Adventure”….. In the words of Boogie Dave, all i can really say at this stage is …”OH MY GOD!!!!”. It far exceeded my expectations, and the narrative and diversity is just seeming to fall into place. Its turning into a very film like experience, and i can see it being most worthy of press coverage. You must excuse my excitable tone, but after 12 years of working on this, to actually have music i have written encapsulated in a set of this proportions is an exciting prospect in itself.. Having the opportunity to perform it in the 2 best venues in Birmingham, with all those talented people, one of which is where it all began for me…Well you can imagine :)

After another steward session, this time cut short thanks to some bloke not turning up for his security post in a shop somewhere in dudley, i met up with one of my best friends, the inspiring Elin. While we was suppin on a pint in the Rainbow i had an great chat with Kent, about Project X, his Rainbow warehouse, and about all this creative talent in Birmingham and how we can pool our resources, to acheive the same profile as other major cities.

Ducks take flightA couple of hours later i was chatting to him again at the Project X meeting, and tickets, sponsorship, and a brief look at the various areas, and possible participants were discussed. I’m a little tired to ellaborate on it all now, so more news soon.

After a good long day of blog backlog yesterday, and more birthday sunshine, i had a slightly late start this morning, arriving just in time to join our event management group for our “group visit” to the Cincinatti Building.

Sunset in Highbury Park
The building is an interesting one, with its real 1950’s american style, and prime location and size. The buillding itself is one that has been bought by Urban Splash, and is on offer to creative groups and individuals who can utilise the space, until it gets turned into flats and hotels in two years time. A 200 seated auditorium, working canteen and conference room, with what seemed like hundreds of rooms, are all available to anyone who wants to do something to raise the buildings profile and communty interaction. The community in question is Castle Vale estate, which sits right opposite the Cincinatti building

After we got back and wrote our ideas for a funding project to use the building for, i went off to Sparkbrook for my meeting with Vj Chromatouch today, to discuss our forthcoming collaberations on the Drop Beats and Project X sets.

Always nice to see Leon, and he introduced me to some video clips, his new stray dog. It seems hes rather more busy than we anticipated, so will only be available the 2 weeks beforehand, so it looks like its going to be putting together the soundtrack for him to work from as opposed bouncing ideas back and forth. Either way i really hoping Leon can create a real strong narrative visually, as opposed to pretty visuals. While we have worked together on Project X, Peace Not War and Mr Elephant Events, I’ve only really ever caught glimpses of what he does as i’m always djing, but i know its going to be veerry special. Other vjs I’ve been impressed by are the M.A.S.H djs, and Keir and his mate at the last Jibbering event. Natural travelling and cultural imagery that you can connect with, and they way they used it really worked, and expressed, whether you caught bits or watched the whole lot. That mixed in with lots of clever video clips and samples is what i’m imagining, on top of all my accapellas, music and live stuff. We are going to trigger video/audio samples via a midi keyboard on top of our vjing and djing, and it should al culminate in a massive film like dj/vj performance :)

Leon Chromotouch vjing at Mr Elephant 2

On my way home, i then got a call from Adam Regan asking if i wanted to go check out the Hare and Hounds to do a monthly night there. After a quick meeting with him at the bull, i hooked up with Pyn to go check it out. A great space with an already well setup rig, so am looking at collaberating with local businesses to deliver something that would really work, though probably will start in the new year, as there is so much on at the mo…The rest of the eve we were joined by our lovely housemate Fran, and later i learnt a russian song. :)

The other half of the two days a week event management course i am currently on at the Bond in Digbeth, is a day with Les the security guard, who takes us through a series of workbooks all about stewarding. Not really my (or anyone else’s bag), but essential for the full qualification, and is fairly interesting, despite the subject matter.

A tall building in BarcelonaI was therefore pleased to find that there were some music workshops from 3-5pm, from the providers of my new deal for musicians course - Armstrong Learning, who were having their annual general meeting there. However after 45 minutes of listening to some guy from stoke who was on a musical mission with his band, i realised at 4.50 that there wasn’t going to be any workshops, and that it had probably been suggested by the person who had just left, due to their current ofsted inspection! Funny how workshops come out when the word ofsted gets mentioned. …….I think we’ve got a one “workshop” now booked for the day of my last N.D.F.M review! Ah well their phone calls are useful.

After a quick phone chat with Nik, (who has just a launched his special fx online shop), and a bike ride home, i had a quick bite to eat and email catch up, and then it was back to Digbeth for the Project X Meeting. It was a very productive meeting, partly due to the small size of the group, and we discussed Sponsorship, Press, and who and what the musical components could, ending with a walk through of the current Hero’s Journey narrative, and some ideas about musical and visual integration. For my section i am working towards a set which incorporates all that has gone before in the first 4 hours, incorporating 4 tracks i am currently working on, and as many live musicians and visual elements as poss, in the last stage which is Freedom to Live, which is where the hero assimilates all that has gone before him, in the real reward/celebration of the Journey, (like in Star Wars when the Rebellion is victorious over the Empire, or in the Matrix where the humans are victorious over the machines.)
