So this thursday is the screening of the Finished with the War Piece as part of this years “New Vibes”.  It’s a dance on film piece choreographed by Lucy Nicholls, directed by Liam D’Authereau, with performances by Saffy Setohy, Pippa Lund, and Krista Vuori, and also features my first 12 minute soundtrack.

 New Vibes flyer 1

This is the first time i’ve been asked to compose a track for a dance on film piece, yet this will be my second outing as part of new vibes, as a dj/vj/dance piece i worked on with Birmingham Dance Collective (originally for our peace not war room at drop beats not bombs) was featured at last years New Vibes.

This has been a really good experience for me, and again i’ve learnt a lot from working in collaboration with some real talented people, in areas that are relatively new to me. I’ve been learning quite a lot from the studio point of view, and seem to be constantly reaching new levels with my music. While i still feel i’ve got a long way to go, i’m pretty excited to be previewing the finished piece of our collective efforts in such a forum, (especially as i didn’t get to see last years, as i was djing at the Anti-World Festival.)

The piece was inspired by a  poem from 1917 by Siegfried Sassoon, entitled “Finished With the War”, and there is a description by its creators here. Lucy and Liam suggested early on, that the piece of music should have a building nature, whilst in someway subtly reflecting the feelings of anxiety, and powerlessness we can feel as a society with the current iraq situation. They were also leaning towards an organic yet glitchy breaks sound, and were keen on using different layers and dynamics, whilst still allowing something that works musically as well as a dance piece.

With that in mind, I thought it might be interesting to share the process thus far of creating the music.

Finished with War Still 2 by Liam D'autherau

I began working on the music for the piece a few weeks ago, collecting everyday sounds from around the house, by using my binaurul microphones and an mp3 recorder. (Samples ranged from opening and shutting the window to the rain, to recording the kettle boiling!), and it was interesting to note just how varied our everyday soundscape is, and just how much i miss.

After some selective editing, i then sourced a few layers of noise from various vst instruments, ran them through some effects, and layered them in cubase, alongside various sourced samples of everyday, industrial and film sounds. This very quickly generated a narrative within my head, which is something i find interesting when creating music.

Firstly it seemed to be from the point of view of an old war veteran, trying to finish with the war, and then it quickly became more geared towards expressing the corruption of war, using some recognisable samples which seemed to subtly reflect where the power lies, and how size and power so easily stifles any opposition.

The samples also led me to think about chompsky esque suggestions of corporations and the media can dull down the nation, and the contrast of the binaurul recordings made me think about how much everyday thoughts and distractions can play its part in the bigger picture.

Obviously I don’t know if these things will come across, but it helps me when writing music to have interesting things to work with. Thankfully early drafts of the piece generated positive responses from Liam, Lucy and Pyn, so i got down to working on the glitchy breaks side of things.

Finished with War Still 1 by Liam D'autherau

I began with a few glitchy loops, and a few plugins and effects to generate a basic style, and then built up the track using drum and sound efx samples, bass and synth instruments, and the binaurul samples. I then found and sampled a recording i found of someone reading the poem out, and tried scratching that in over the top. My needle (and my scratching!) isn’t the best, so i began to chop and refine the samples, trying to leave in whats needed, (whilst also keep it quite random and disjointed)

After some experiments with my kaoss pad, tempos changes, and midi automation, i had a fairly solid structure for the dancers to work around ready for a week of rehearsals and filming, and then the production week.

After laying out a basic structure for a track, i normally like to go back and edit what i’ve done, being free to move parts around as the mood takes me. However i found having to keep to a basic structure (for obvious reasons), allowed me to move forward with the track in a much more structured way.

The other thing i learn was that something which might sound and work much better musically, doesn’t necessirily work better from a dance or visual perspective. Often when the parts come together, things become apparent, and i like the way everyone has dealt with changes on this project, as its been a real pleasure working together.

 The Flyer by Liam

Today i’ll be turning my ears to those of a sound engineer, and Liam and Lucy have their final all night editing session, ready for the showing tomorrow.

There will be a range of pieces on the night, all shown from the comfortable Patrick Centre at the Hippodrome. If your on facebook, you can check out the event here, and advance tickets are only a fiver, and available from www.dancexchange.org.uk/shows

Hope you can make it  :)

This weekend started with the gig at the Hare and Hounds. Giles Peterson was upstairs, and me and Sam Redmore were downstairs. I didnt get any time to check out Giles, as it was going off downstairs, but i bet it was good. Here’s a little bit of the end of my set (before the Aphrodite/Bobby Mcferrin/Al Green/Nitin Sawhney encore)

Its important to mention that the drum n bass only came out for the last 20 minutes btw. Before then from my side, was 3 hours of Quantic Soul Orchestra/Dj Food/Dj Shadow/Coldcut/Kruder and Dorfmeister/Mr Scruff, that kind of thing, alongside classic soul tracks, some underground funk, and of course a few musical numbers. ;)

I got some decent scratching practise in (after Andy the hare sound man, had valiantly sorted a working 1210 from the bulls head out), and Sam kicked us off with his own unique blend of soul, funk, reggae, and personal edits that he is fast becoming known for. Sam’s a thoroughly lovely chap, and a really talented dj. He runs a night at the bulls head called Freestyle, and he edits pretty much all the tracks he plays. Check his myspace for his forthcoming gigs.

Finished with the War Flyer

The rest of the weekend was spent half with my lovely girlfriend, and half completing the final draft for the Dance on Film Finished With the War piece, ready for shooting on monday. We had to edit a couple of my favourite bits, so that they work with the dancers, but i’m really feeling like this could be the one that also doubles as my first breaks release..There’s a fair bit to do on it, before releasing it into the wild, but its definitely on the right lines.

Oh and tonight i wanted to mention that my good friend Rich Batsford his hosting his fantastic Music by Candelit evening tonight in Moseley. Well worth a visit, and something that seems to be growing with each year.

This week its been all about Cubase and this Dvd track. Its going well, and i’ve learnt how to link up parts of my studio i never even new existed, but its been long long days!

Room with a view

I’ve found a load of useful information on the interweb, and i generally bookmark what i’ve found using the fantatbulous delicious. I’m going to be using a lot of those resources in a more structured way on the reckorder project, but for now i thought i would be useful to share these links for anyone else who uses Cubase SX, as they’ve saved me a load of time, (especially that Play Order function!)

Hope you find them as useful as i did, and keep in touch as i’ll be posting useful bits and bobs along the way for anyone that musically inclined

Ok, so this reckorder thing is something i seemed to have babbled on about a bit, and i still havent launched the website. No matter, though as i’ve started sketching out the idea as performance, and it seems like i’m further than i thought.

(c )Aart Tanner Reckorder Logo

S0 the basic idea was a website where i blog the process of what happens in the studio. I offer tutorials on things that have caused me incredible amounts of time to work out, and i share the reckordings and samples that i have collected and used. I also involve some local musicians in each track, and get them to share some tips, whilst also trying to incorporate as much of my studio as poss, (so i get better :), and some recordings with my trusty binauruls.

The tracks would make up an album, and a story/journey, and the album would be performed in whatever way i can. So far i’ve wrote about 6 - 10 tracks which all have promise and are at varying stages of development. After listening to all of them, they seem to have some good stuff i can use in all, and hopefully as i get better as a producer the ideas will formulate songs that i’m happy with.

Whats interesting is that i can now see how the songs could be played live, incorporating various dj experiences and collaborations over the years. It’s also exciting to note that i’ve met a vj that is interested in developing new dj/vj stuff, and along with the new technologies i’m getting to know, the current and evolving network, and my own musical ability coming along leaps and bounds, it seems that it may be a lot sooner than i imagined before the idea has real legs.

May 15

Ah with all the promoting “stuff” yesterday i forgot to report my first two music commissions! I’ve been writing music for quite a few years now, and this is the first time i’ve been commissioned to produce something from scratch at least!

An old studio i once lived in

So the first was a meeting with Anne Marie to discuss producing an original track for a festival dvd, which would be aimed at Wolverhampton Council, and a Black Country Partnership, and was to give the dvd a bit of a lift, with a carnival esqu feel.

And the second was from Lucy Nicholls who is a dancer and choreographer, and Liam Blendstate who is a visual artist, and is for a piece for the New Arts Festival entitled Finished with the War. Again its a full track, but this one is going to be to provide the soundtrack to a dance on film piece to be performed at the New Vibes showcase.

The feel will be based on a poem by Sigfried Sassoon, and i will start by gathering some sounds either recorded or otherwise, based on the atomosphere we are trying to create.

Right i’m off to find my binaurul micrphones!

Oh and on the Project X venue front, Peckers was great, but unfortunatly too small. We may have another option in the Que club, so more news as it breaks. The actual show by the way looks immense, and is ready to go…if we can find anywhere to actually do it!

May 6

The sun is glorious, so it was most definitly time for a bbq and beers in evening. I’d however gone to town to pick up my birthday present, so from 11pm it was time to get to know it.

Novation Remote 25 Sl

On monday i went through the pain staking process of setting my other keyboard up. Working with midi and cubase sx, is not the most straightforward of processes, and one that i have found very troublesome. On of the main secrets i learnt if you are trying to use the learn funtion is that you need to keep clicking learn while you turn the controller! It does work, (though for years i thought i was missing something!)…..Anway more on this on my reckorder site coming soon.

This new little baby however is supposed to be designed for intuitively mapping itself to the plugs and controllers, mixers and instruments, that it is almost impossible to do in cubase sx 3. (though very easy with most other sequencers, thanks to the more intuitive midi learn functions).

The main reason for buying this was to have hands on control for my Traktor setup though, so as soon as i plugged it in, i was hoping to see the controls in Traktor moving. This however was not to be, and a little reading of the manual was needed. Being me, like most others i know, the manual was the last thing i wanted to read, so i played with it for about 5 hours, reading forums, and watching video tutorials.

Along the way i worked out a fair few things thoug, but basically to control Traktor you need to assign each controller in the remote sl editor, save the syx file as Traktor, and then create a .tks file in Traktor. There are some about on that djtech tools site, but unless you like using what they do, you better of creating your own.

In cubase however its a lot better, and most of the plugins are already recognised. All you need to do is load up the latest automap from the website, and then open up cubase, and the plugin, and it should automatically map your controls. There are also some templates you can dload from the site, if automap doesnt work well (like stylus rmx for example)

Either way making electronic music is a whole new world when you can actually move play the instrument, as opposed to program the instrument. Dynamics and flow of sound is crucial to making your ideas sound good, so get on those knobs, and record you movements.

I should add btw, that its only Cubase that i’ve had the controller problems with. Reason and Ableton have an easy midi learn. Still with whatever program i can def recommend this automap feature on the Novation control series of midi controllers, as its nice for it to map automatically.

In Traktor i’ve now built a template so that i can drop loops and cue points on the fly, and then play them with the pads and keys live. This is my first step to the live jamming idea i mentioned, and think it could really work and open up some new avenues for my djing (with a whole lot of practice of course!)

I also just ordered my first (30th birthday) djembe, from a friend that makes them for pretty much cost. With the arsenal of instruments, and people to play them, i’m more excited about djing, than i ever have been.

And this new controller is small enough for me to go and sit outside in the sunshine and dj with!

May 2

and i haven’t been blogging enough on this site at all! There’s been a lot going on, so i’ll attempt a quick summary, and be on my way!

A cork in the ocean

So the biggest focus was the Mr Elephant Birthday Bash, and after everyone has been working super hard on it, it thankfully went really well, and generated a bevvy of positive response (and some more interesting offers!)

I’ve also turned 30, and had lots of fun celebrating with friends and family over the last two weeks.

Dj wise i’ve been offered some gigs of a different nature, with one next friday at the Botanical Gardens supporting John Mostyn’s band, a gig with Giles Peterson in June at the Hare and Hounds, and of course the forthcoming Project X Presents gig, all of which is going to allow me to break in some new dj ground, and spread my wings musically, which im obviously looking forward to :)

Project X is something i should have been blogging about a lot more, as there’s been a lot of interesting developments for the next show, which is to be the first commissioned show since we started back in 2004. This means New Generation Arts have actually offered us some money to help cover the cost of the event, which will hopefully cover the massive production costs that Project X incurs.

Project X Presents

My other event, Rockfall, which i promote with local legend Boogie Dave, (and more recently with superstar dj R Caine), is still going nice and strong, though i had to make the very difficult decision to step out of it this year, as i couldn’t afford to put the money or time into it. :(

I originally started working with Boogie on a night i was running at Forme bar, and from 2007 we decided to move to the custard Factory and turn Rockfall (the current main stage of Drop Beats Not Bombs) into its own arena, so we could bring the breaks to brum, and showcase our own local talent.

We worked really hard, rammed the venues, and its been a really fantastic couple of years, though unfortunatly the costs, and time demands have taken too much of a tole, hence the decision of needing to take a back seat for a while and concentrate on the forthcoming Mr Elephant Presents, and Project X Presens, and my own music and djing projects and workshops.

Rockfall Rockin It (Pic By Munkey)

On the educator front i have a lot of work to do for my course (a whole music tech course to write and two lessons to deliver by the end of the month) but it’s going real well, (getting distinctions each month??!!), and i’m really enjoying it. I stupidly double booked a couple of months, so have a bit of extra work to make up, but it’s all in hand. One of the double bookings was a playscheme i hosted, where i worked with Dramask, and we did a drama and music tech workshop for some kids between 4 and 11. I took my decks, mic, and kaoss pad in, and we produced the soundtracks for a piece of drama that the kids made about space. The kids and playworkers loved it, and so did we, and its given me the confidence to approach funders, and go for our own project ideas this year.

Dramask At University of First Age

On the music making front i’ve been doing some learning which includes bass guitar, djembe, and guitar, and i’ve made some time to work on my tracks. I actually have about 10 tracks in progress now, all of different genres, (some acoustic, some breaks, some downtempo, all with an electronic edge), and i’ve enjoyed using different parts of my home studio.

One of the main aims is to produce an album, that i can dj it out, and ultimately perform live with other musicians. I’ve been trying hard to get a flow going, so that i can work with other musicians without the constraints of time, whilst sharing the process by providing tutorials as part of my reckorder idea, (in the hope that it will help others), but it’s becoming another thing creating a backlog, so i may have to find an easier way of integrating it (at the moment at least.) Either way its great to be writing music again, and i’m definitly evolving with each session.

Mr Elephant By Elin Morgan

Mr Elephant is the main focus at the moment though. Aside from working relentlessly on the website, and developing the various strands, i’ve had a very productive meeting last month with Shu about my business plan, and he offered some great advice. This year i have to find ways of generating some sustainable income, and i hope to do that with the strands of Mr Elephant, some paid djing gigs, and some workshops, (however how that all will fit together at the moment is not clear, as i’m still working for hours every day, and 95 % of the time for free.

That said a couple of the forthcoming djing gigs are paid so far this year, and the Mr Elephant has generated enough to pay everyone AND a bit for myself (which is great!), with the second event’s costs being funded externally, so thats not so much pressure. The workshops and ideas for mr elephant have all been generating interest, and i’ve already had a few offers for some interesting offshoot projects.

So all in all this could be the year i earn an income from my toils. It may not equal the amount of time and effort that goes into it all, but as long as its enough to pay the bills, and everyone fairly for their time, i’ll be most happy.

Wishing you all a very prosperous summer season :)

Nov 20

Today was a day of meetings from start to finish.

First was one at the dss, to inform them of my course details, and business plan development, and then after a little work on that, i worked through a tutorial on how to make an amen style break (something i wanted to do for so long now again from an old music making article from computer music. (Save as and view from desktop for bigger picture)

Making a Breakbeat 1
Making a breakbeat 2In the afternoon i then went to Jibbering to meet our designer for Mr Elephant. We went through the site plan i had been working on last night, and he made notes to go forth with the implementation of the website design. Then it was onto the prince, to meet Diane, to secure the first venue for our next event, and then back to jibbering for 4pm, to meet the ever inspiring Andrew Dubber. and a lucky encounter with blog extraordinaire Pete Ashton. Both gave some great tips, the main one being that i can pretty much do what i want for both sites on a customized wordpress. Which is great news, as i do have to sacrifice somethings having wordpress embedded into my joomla site. Dubber also pointed me in the direction of some useful links, (shared below), and suitably encouraging about the plans for the Mr Elephant site.Get your stats for your website http://www.google.com/analytics/
Mind Map on your computer - http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
Get suitably paid for your website - http://newmusicstrategies.com/2007/11/13/ignore-this-its-just-an-ad/

After that it was back to home, and onto a meeting at Anne Marie’s to discuss the project x narrative. We quickly agreed that it should be a mix of both events so far, with the intention of getting the moods of the audience down on paper (with big coloured pens of course) by the end of the night. Rich Batsford has blogged about it here, and there’s the next meeting next monday.

Can you spot him?
A Penguin in a tree in Kings Heath

Strange….Actaully, I’d been thinking of doing some video blogging for a while now, so thanks to this unusual sighting, i thought i’d give it a go with this ridiculous news report. Hmmmm……Anyway, my main aim for today, was to tackle the arrangement issues of a track i’ve been working on based around a reggae flute piece and a beautifully sung spanish love song, both recorded at a recent studio session with the multi talented Amrita. The spanish love song, entitled “Dos Gardenias”, has quite a diverse range of notes, so to make life easier for me, i gave Amrita a call asking for the key, notes and lyrics. We decided it would be easier to get a copy of the sheet music, so thats now on hold until we meet up tomoz.

While i was waiting for her callback i picked up my guitar, and wrote yet another song! Turning up my amp very loud, tuning a string to the wrong note, and experimenting with some vsti’s for the bass melody unleashed a whole new exploration and some (rather dark) lyrics came soon after to compliment it. Nice ;)

After a lunch break i then found yet another useful article from an old music making magazine, which has answered a few more questions i have had, and which may be useful to those of you that use Cubase Sx.

Creating a song template in Cubase SXFacebook has distracted me for the rest of the afternoon, (which i really didnt intend for it to!). I must start to learn how to use it productively, and not just spend hours looking for old friends, though it’s nice to see some old faces enjoying life.

Right! I’d best get onto what i was supposed to be doing!

Nov 13

After a while away from the blog, i thought i’d drop a quick update, and share a few things i’ve found most useful

A few days after our last Project X event, we were straight onto organising the next one with a very interesting feedback meeting at the anchor. Rich Batsford blogs about it here, and for those that missed the event, here’s a collective round upSince then i have been concentrating on the forthcoming Mr Elephant plans ready for a meeting with Aart and Dubber next week. The third mixtape, entitled Mr Elephant’s Falling In Love came together really quickly, and I redid a section of the second mixtape, inspired mainly by some feedback from Ant, and to make sure it levelled with the amazingly high standard of the cd covers designed by our very own Aart Tanner. I’ve really enjoyed putting the mixtapes together with music that isn’t the latest or biggest breaks. Aside from learning about some of my favourite artists through Last.Fm, and playing and sharing the music i love with people i like, it feels pretty satisfying on a creative level, to be telling a story, with music i like, without the added focus of mixing, or making people dance.

The other thing i been doing, largely due to having the whole house (and more importantly the kitchen!) to myself for a weekend, is making noise on my guitar. After 4/5 hours work on Mr Elephant a day, i relaxed with some food, a glass or 2 of red, and did a few searches for things i been wondering about for ages, namely singing, guitar and songwriting. Thanks to the magic of the internet, i now have a better understanding of the basics of singing, the importance of song structure, a first lesson in guitar technique (that video above), and (very importantly for me) how to restring my guitar without breaking strings! (though i did bust the one i’d already put on in the attempt to “correct it”!) :(

For anyone similarly musically interested here’s what’s helped and inspired me this weekend.
Singing -
http://www.wikihow.com/Sing
http://www.rogerlove.com/tips.html
http://www.essortment.com/hobbies/becomebettersi_svpd.htm
http://in.answers.yahoo.com/

These are all just simple searches, and the songwriting tips were from this (rather christian, but surprisingly useful) website

Inspired to write a song after 3 glasses of red, I came up with a nice little ditty on my guitar, and then with song structure, and rhyming structure in mind, i sat down to write the lyrics. Normally the point to skin up, but after almost 3 weeks of giving that up, i decided to look elsewhere for inspiration..So, i went for a ride on my bike…. 5 minutes later, i had a few characters for a story, and 30 minutes later, i had somthing that resembled a pretty decent song :) As i bust my string on the restringing tutorial afterwards i can’t work on it anymore, but this is definitly an improvement on any previous attempts, and hopefully will be something worth posting soon.

After a couple more youtube tutorials, i watched an amazing gig on http://www.moviesfoundonline.com/ of Jeff Buckley afterwards. A real emotional and inspired performance, and reaffirmed just how easy it is to find inspiration, and great music stuff on the net these days. (Here it is for anyone who wants to watch it.)

Who needs a t.v when you want something inspiring eh? ;)
